Animal Control


The Amelia County Animal Shelter and Animal Control Office has two full-time and one part-time employee. The Animal Control Department utilizes a vast array of volunteers and volunteer groups to make the Amelia County Animal Shelter among the most efficient Public Shelters in the Commonwealth of Virginia at having animals adopted. Building Department


Like Building Officials across the Commonwealth, the Amelia County Building Inspector's Office is responsible for enforcement of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (VUSBC). For more infromation about building codes and department services please visit the Building Department Page.

Children's Services


The mission of the Amelia County CPMT is to manage the cooperative effort in Amelia County under the authority of the Children's Services Act of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Office of Children's Services (OCS) to better serve the needs of troubled and at-risk youths and their families while maximizing the use of state and community resources. Economic Development


The County Administrator serves as the Director of Economic Development for Amelia County as well as the Secretary and Clerk to The Amelia County Industrial Development Authority (IDA). Emergency Management


The Amelia County Department of Emergency Management coordinates a comprehensive, all hazards, emergency management program for Amelia County. This program includes activities of preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation. For more information please visit the Emergency Management Page.

Environmental Management


The Environmental Management department is responsible for inspections and code compliance at both the Maplewood Landfill (Waste Management) and County convenience centers, as well as, managing Amelia's extensive recycling program. Finance Department

Parks and Recreation


The mission of the Amelia County Recreation and Parks Department is to enhance the quality of life in Amelia County by providing the best possible recreational facilities, open natural spaces and leisure programs for our citizens. Planning and Zoning


The Planning and Zoning Department provides technical support to the Board of Supervisors, the Planning Commission, the Board of Zoning Appeals, and related subcommittees of each. Staff is responsible for processing and reviewing rezonings, conditional use permits, special exceptions, variances, site plans, and subdivisions. Public Library


The James L. Hamner Public Library attained its charter in 1973. Construction of the current building began in 1999 and the library opened to the public in July 2000. The library, located in Amelia Court House, is named after Dr. James Loving Hamner, a deceased physician in Amelia County. Public Works
